Why This?

I am a Northern Irish protestant atheist with a catholic name who became a Canadian about 53 years ago, and who has spent most of the last half century in the Arctic, with one foray into Borneo in the 1960s, and a tense retreat to Victoria in the late 1980s. I now live in Iqaluit, but spend the summers on a boat in Victoria.

But why I am doing this? Well, you know, old men like to tell stories, and  they all think the world is interested in what they have to say. For years I have been jotting down incidents from the past on the computer, waiting for the energy to start organising the stuff into some logical and connected order. (Later n0te: I’ve started the process, but haven’t got very far.)

And then along came the internet, and eventually the blog. (What an ugly word … it sounds like one of those fake swear words from the Sopranos, “You freaking blogger, you!”)

Anyway, I’m going to gather together a random set of these reminiscences and dump them in the attic, as they are, disorganised, self-indulgent, and in no discernible order. Maybe I’ll get round to the real work later. Meanwhile I advertise it as an excellent remedy for insomnia.

Oh! If you want to proceed a little more logically, I stuck a sub-page named “Background” under this present heading. But you could simply wander around a bit first in the other sections.
